Frequently asked questions

Answers on buying a car in Dubai, what it costs, the export paperwork and the import rules in your country.

Buying a car

Can you bid for me at UAE car auctions?

Yes. You tell us the make, model, year and budget, we send condition reports and photos before any bid, and our team bids on your behalf up to the maximum you set. On a win we invoice the lot price and our service fee, then move straight into export, as our auction assistance page explains.

How can I check a car's history before I buy?

Ask for the VIN and confirm it matches the windscreen, door pillar and registration card, then decode it to check the model year and engine against the advert. Our VIN tracking page links to a free decoder, and the VIN check guide lists the history records worth pulling.

Are cars from Dubai left hand drive?

Most Dubai stock is left hand drive, which suits right side driving markets such as Ghana, Nigeria and Ivory Coast. Some countries, Kenya for example, only register right hand drive cars, so tell us your destination before you choose.

What is the difference between GCC spec and US spec cars?

GCC spec cars were built and sold new for the Gulf, typically with uprated cooling and dust protection, while US spec cars were built for North America and imported into the UAE later. Both are left hand drive, and the biggest practical difference is usually the car's history, as our GCC vs US spec guide explains.

Costs and payment

How much is the RTA export certificate in Dubai?

The RTA charges AED 70 for a light vehicle export certificate, or AED 140 if the car leaves on export plates. The RTA will not issue it while traffic fines are unpaid, as our car export documents guide sets out.

How do I pay for a car and its shipping?

Once you confirm the car, we issue a proforma invoice covering the vehicle, shipping and any extras you choose, such as insurance. For auction purchases, the invoice covers the lot price and our service fee. Ask the export team for a quote on your car.

How much duty does it cost to import a car into Ghana?

Ghana does not charge duty on your invoice price. Customs works out its own value, then applies duty of 5, 10 or 20 percent by vehicle category plus roughly 20 percent in VAT and levies, as the worked example in our Ghana car import duty guide shows.

What does marine insurance cover?

Total Loss Only covers your vehicle against total loss at sea, such as sinking, stranding and fire. All Risk Marine adds partial damage, theft and pilferage in transit and loading or unloading damage, and Extended Inland cover for the road leg after the port is quoted per shipment on the insurance page.

Shipping and documents

Should I ship by RoRo or container?

RoRo is usually the cheaper choice for one running car, typically USD 800 to 1,500 to West African ports, while a 20ft container typically costs USD 1,800 to 2,800. A container suits two or more cars, high value cars and cars that do not run, as our RoRo vs container guide explains.

What documents do I need to export a car from the UAE?

The core file is the RTA export certificate, which cancels the UAE registration, the customs export declaration and the bill of lading, plus your ID. Your destination port adds its own requirements, which our car export documents guide lists country by country.

Can I track my car while it is at sea?

Yes. Track the shipment by VIN or bill of lading on our VIN tracking page, and our team shares the latest vessel and arrival information with you on WhatsApp.

Destinations and import rules

Who arranges the Ghana Certificate of Conformance?

Our agent arranges the Certificate of Conformance for cars we ship to Ghana. It is required for used cars shipped from 1 October 2026, and used cars over 15 years old are barred from that date, as our Ghana duty guide explains.

What is the age limit for importing a car into Nigeria?

Nigeria allows cars up to 12 years from the year of manufacture, so 2014 is the oldest build that can enter in 2026. Our Nigeria import guide also covers the duty base and the green surcharge by engine size.

What is the age limit for importing a car into Ivory Coast?

Used passenger cars must be no more than five years past their first registration abroad. Our Ivory Coast import guide explains how the rule is counted and the duty stack at Abidjan.

Can you ship a car from Dubai to Uganda or another landlocked country?

Yes. Cars for landlocked countries sail to a gateway port, such as Mombasa or Dar es Salaam for Uganda, and our destinations page lists the port for every country. Costs depend on the route and the destination's duties, so ask the team for a quote on your car.
