How to Buy a Car from Dubai Without Visiting: A Safe 7 Step Process
The remote buying process that protects you: choosing stock, independent inspection, secure payment, export paperwork, shipping and tracking to your port.

Car buying in the UAE has moved steadily online over the past few years, with dealers completing everything from selection to payment digitally, a shift Gulf News has tracked since the first fully online transactions. For international buyers the opportunity is bigger than the convenience: Dubai's used stock is large, well specced and competitively priced, and a car bought here can be exported to most of Africa and the CIS without you ever boarding a plane. The catch is that distance removes your ability to kick the tyres, so the process, not the car, is what protects your money.
Done properly, buying remotely comes down to seven controlled steps: choose from verifiable stock, inspect independently, agree a written export deal, pay through traceable channels, let the exporter run the paperwork, ship on a tracked booking, and clear with documents prepared before arrival.

Step 1: Choose from stock you can verify#
Start from inventories that publish VINs, mileage and condition reports, not social media listings. Every car in our inventory carries its VIN and photo set, and if you want something we do not stock, the auction route opens the whole UAE market with us bidding on your behalf.

Step 2: Inspect before you commit#
Never rely on the seller's photos alone. A third party inspection covering mechanical condition, accident history and mileage verification typically costs little against the price of the car and is the single best fraud filter in the process. For auction cars we inspect before bidding, not after winning. Before the inspection, run the VIN check in Dubai steps so you know the car matches its papers.
Step 3: Agree the deal in writing#
The invoice should name the exact car by VIN, the price, what is included (export fees, shipping, insurance) and the delivery terms to your port. UAE export rules require the car to be free of loans and fines before it can leave, so the contract should state that the seller clears both.
Step 4: Pay through traceable channels#
Bank transfer against the invoice, in stages where possible: a deposit to secure the car and the balance against shipping documents. Avoid cash agents and informal transfer networks entirely; a payment you cannot trace is a payment you cannot recover.
Step 5: The exporter runs the Dubai paperwork#
Deregistration, the RTA vehicle export certificate, export plates and customs filing happen in Dubai and need nothing from you except documents you already have. The cost side is small and fixed; our export cost breakdown itemises every fee so you can check any quote against it.
Step 6: Ship on a tracked booking#
Your car moves by RoRo or container; the choice is a cost and protection trade off we covered in RoRo vs container shipping. Either way you should receive the bill of lading as soon as the vessel sails, and our VIN tracking shows the shipment status from gate in Dubai to discharge at your port.
Step 7: Clear with documents ready before arrival#
Clearance goes wrong when documents chase a car that has already landed. Before the vessel arrives you should hold the export certificate, invoice, bill of lading and your ID copy; for Ghana bound cars, our Dubai to Ghana guide lists what Tema customs asks for and in what order.
What the full remote purchase typically looks like#

| Stage | Who acts | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|
| Selection and inspection | You and the exporter | 2 to 7 days |
| Contract and deposit | You | 1 to 2 days |
| Export paperwork in Dubai | Exporter | 1 to 2 days once fines cleared |
| Vessel booking to sailing | Exporter | 3 to 10 days |
| Ocean transit to West Africa | Carrier | 21 to 30 days |
| Clearance at destination | You or your agent | 2 to 7 days with documents ready |
Frequently asked questions#
Can I buy a car in Dubai if I live in another country?#
Yes. Export sales are exactly how Dubai's car trade serves Africa and the CIS: the exporter sells you the car, handles deregistration and the export certificate, and ships to your port, with no UAE residency or visit required. Local showroom registration rules apply to cars staying in the UAE, not to exports.
How do I avoid being scammed buying a car online from Dubai?#
Verify the VIN against the listing, insist on an independent inspection, pay a company account by bank transfer in stages, and never pay the balance before documents name you. A legitimate exporter will accept every one of those conditions without friction.
How much does it cost to buy and ship a car from Dubai?#
Beyond the car price, budget roughly USD 1,200 to 2,200 for fees, RoRo shipping and insurance to West Africa before destination duties, as our full export cost breakdown itemises. Container shipping and distant ports push the range up.
How long does the whole process take?#
From deposit to a cleared car at a West African port, typically 5 to 8 weeks: about two weeks on the Dubai side and three to four on the water, then clearance. Documents prepared before arrival are what keep the last step at days instead of weeks.
Do I need an agent in my country?#
For most ports a licensed clearing agent is worth the fee: they know the duty schedules and the counter order at the port. We hand over to your agent with a complete document pack, or can recommend partners at the main West African ports through our contact team.
Can you bid for me at UAE car auctions?#
Yes. You set a ceiling, we inspect before bidding and bid on your behalf; auction stock is where the deepest savings sit, as our UAE auction guide explains. Won cars flow into the same export process above from step 3.
Buy with a process, not with hope#
Distance is only a risk when the process is informal. With verifiable stock, independent inspection, staged payment and tracked shipping, buying from Dubai is a routine transaction thousands of importers run every month. Tell us what you are looking for and your destination port through the contact page, or start from the cars available for export now, and we will send a landed quote with the process above written into it.
