VIN Check in Dubai: How to Verify a Car Before You Buy (2026)
A practical VIN check in Dubai, step by step: where to find the 17 characters, how to decode them, which history records to pull and the red flags that should stop a deal.

CARFAX estimated that up to 482,000 flood damaged cars were already on US roads at the start of 2025, with as many as 45,000 more added by mid year storms, according to its August 2025 release. Some of those cars are later sold abroad, and US imports are a regular sight in Dubai yards. A VIN check in Dubai is how you find out whether the car in the photos is the car on the paperwork, and what happened to it before. This guide shows where to find the VIN, how to read it, which records to pull and when to walk away.
For most buyers, the check comes down to three questions answered in order: does the VIN on the car match every document, does the decoded VIN match the advert, and do UAE and overseas records show a clean history. If any answer is no, stop and ask why before any money moves.
Where to find the VIN on a car in Dubai#
A modern VIN has 17 characters made of capital letters and numbers, and US federal rules (49 CFR 565) leave out the letters I, O and Q so they cannot be confused with 1 and 0, as the regulation text sets out. Check it in at least three places:
- Base of the windscreen on the driver's side, readable from outside.
- Door pillar sticker on the driver's side, with the build date.
- Registration card (Mulkiya) for a car registered in the UAE, and the export certificate once it is deregistered.
- Chassis stamp in the engine bay or under a seat, on most models.
Every copy must match character for character. A sticker that looks newer than the car, scratched digits or a mismatch with the invoice is a stop sign, not a typing error.

What each part of the VIN tells you#

| Positions | Section | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier | Maker and country of manufacture |
| 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor | Model, body, engine and restraint type |
| 9 | Check digit | A calculated digit that exposes many altered or mistyped VINs |
| 10 | Model year | The year code, for example R for 2024 and S for 2025 |
| 11 | Plant | The factory that built the car |
| 12 to 17 | Serial number | The car's own production number |
Run the VIN through the free NHTSA VIN decoder, which our VIN tracking page links to. If the decoder says 2.0 litre and the advert says 2.5 litre, or the model year is different, ask before going further. Cars built for North America decode in full, while some Gulf and Asian market cars return less detail, which is itself a clue to the car's origin and spec. Our GCC spec vs US spec guide explains why that matters for price and resale.
Which records a VIN check in Dubai should cover#
| Check | Where | What it shows | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAE vehicle status certificate | RTA website or app, with the owner's consent | UAE owners, test results, impounds and status | Small RTA fee |
| Dealer service history | Franchise dealer, by VIN | Services, warranty work, recalls done | Usually free |
| US title records | NMVTIS approved providers | Title brands such as salvage or flood, last odometer reading | Low cost per report |
| US theft and salvage | NICB VINCheck | Unrecovered theft or salvage records from member insurers | Free, limited searches per day |
| Physical inspection | Independent inspector in Dubai | Repairs, flood signs, real mileage | Paid per car |
For a GCC car, the RTA certificate and dealer history matter most. For a US import, add the NMVTIS and NICB checks, because a salvage or flood brand is recorded against the VIN in the US even after the car is repaired and repainted. NICB says its free tool is not a full history report, so use it alongside the others rather than instead of them.
Red flags that should stop the deal#

- The VIN differs anywhere, between windscreen, door pillar, chassis and documents.
- The seller will not share the VIN before a deposit, or sends only a photo of a document.
- A salvage, flood or rebuilt brand shows up on a US record.
- The odometer reads lower than an earlier recorded figure.
- The decode does not match the advert's year, engine or trim.
For auction cars, run the same checks before you bid, not after you win, as our UAE auction guide explains. The VIN check fits into the wider remote buying process in our guide to buying a car from Dubai online.
Why the VIN matters again at your port#
The VIN follows the car all the way to clearance. It appears on the invoice, the export certificate and the bill of lading, and customs at Tema, Lagos or Abidjan will compare it with the car. One wrong character can hold a car at the port, which is why our Dubai to Ghana shipping guide lists the documents to check before the vessel sails.
Frequently asked questions#
How can I check a car's VIN in Dubai?#
Read the VIN from the windscreen, door pillar and Mulkiya, confirm they match, then decode it with the free NHTSA decoder. For UAE history, request the RTA vehicle status certificate, which needs the current owner's consent by text message.
How do I check car history in the UAE?#
The RTA vehicle status certificate covers a Dubai registered car's UAE record, and the franchise dealer can confirm service and warranty work by VIN. For cars imported from the US, add a title report through the NMVTIS system to catch salvage and flood brands.
Can I check a VIN number for free?#
Yes, partly. The NHTSA decoder and NICB VINCheck are free, and our VIN tracking page links to the decoder. A full history usually combines these with a paid report and an independent inspection.
What does a VIN number tell you?#
The 17 characters identify the maker, model and engine family, a check digit, the model year, the factory and the car's serial number. Decoding it confirms that the car matches its advert, and history databases use the same number to record accidents, theft, title brands and mileage.
Where is the VIN number on a car?#
On most cars it is at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side and on a sticker in the driver's door pillar. It is also printed on the registration card and stamped on the chassis, and all copies must match.
