GCC Spec vs US Spec Cars: Which to Buy in Dubai for Export to Africa
GCC spec vs US spec cars explained for African buyers: what really differs, how to tell them apart, like for like prices from live Dubai stock and when a US spec car is worth it.

The UAE imports some 300,000 used vehicles a year, mainly from the United States, Japan and Germany, according to the federal standards authority quoted by Gulf News. That is why every Dubai yard mixes cars built for the Gulf with cars built for America. GCC spec vs US spec is the first question most African buyers ask us. When we checked 2,152 listings for 19 popular models on our site in October 2026, 376 said GCC spec, 87 said US or Canadian spec and the rest did not say. This guide explains what differs, how to tell, and what each typically costs.
In practice, a GCC spec car is the safer default for Africa: it was built for heat and dust, it was sold new through a Gulf dealer, and its history is usually traceable in the UAE. A US spec car typically costs less for the same model and year, which can be worth it once the VIN history is clean.
GCC spec vs US spec: what actually differs#
"Spec" means the market a car was built and sold new for. A GCC spec car was made for the six Gulf states and sold through an official dealer in the region. A US spec car was made for North America and later shipped to the UAE, often as a used or auction car.
| Area | GCC spec | US spec |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling and air conditioning | Typically uprated radiator, fan and AC for 45 degree summers | Built for North American climates |
| Dust and corrosion | Typically extra air filtration and underbody protection | Standard for the US market |
| Speedometer and labels | Kilometres, Arabic and English labels | Often miles first, English only labels |
| History | Usually sold new in the UAE, service records with local dealers | Previous life in the US, sometimes an insurance write off |
| Price in Dubai | Higher for the same model and year | Typically lower |
| Steering | Left hand drive | Left hand drive |
The exact hardware differences vary by brand and model, so treat the table as the usual pattern rather than a rule for every car. Both specs are left hand drive, so both suit Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire and the rest of West and Central Africa.
Fuel is rarely the problem people think it is. Regular petrol in the US is 87 octane according to fueleconomy.gov, but the US pump figure uses a different measuring method from the 91, 95 and 98 grades sold in the UAE, so a US spec engine runs normally on Gulf fuel.

The real risk with US spec cars is history#
Hardware differences are small next to the history question. A car becomes a cheap US import for a reason, and sometimes that reason is a flood, fire or crash. CARFAX estimated that up to 482,000 flood damaged cars were already on US roads at the start of 2025, plus as many as 45,000 more from mid year storms, in its August 2025 release.
The UAE has banned the import, insurance and registration of grossly damaged used cars since 2017, including water damaged, burnt and rebuilt vehicles. Cars meant for re export must still be declared, though, so a clean looking US spec car in a Dubai yard still deserves a VIN history check before you pay. Our VIN check in Dubai guide walks through the records to pull.
How much cheaper is a US spec car? Real examples#
These are real listings on our site in October 2026. They are examples, not quotes, and condition, options and mileage move each car's price.
| Car | GCC spec listing | US spec listing |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 Toyota Camry SE | USD 29,940 at 25,200 km | USD 25,045 at 45,000 km |
| 2022 to 2024 Toyota RAV4 | USD 25,145 to 25,945 for 2022 to 2023 base models at 84,000 to 102,000 km | Typically USD 23,000 to 25,000 across 25 listings, such as this 2024 RAV4 XLE at 46,200 km |
On these examples the US spec car was about 5 to 16 percent cheaper, and the RAV4s were cheaper even with a higher trim and lower mileage. The saving is real, but it only holds if the car's past is clean.

How to tell if a car is GCC spec or US spec#
Never rely on the word "GCC" in an advert alone. Some descriptions use it loosely, so check the car itself:
- Door pillar sticker. A GCC car usually carries Arabic and English labels; a US car shows a US federal compliance sticker in English.
- Instrument cluster. US cars often show miles per hour as the main scale.
- VIN decode. Cars built for North America decode fully on the NHTSA decoder, including plant and trim. Our VIN tracking page links to it.
- Documents. A GCC car normally has a UAE dealer service history; an imported car has customs import papers showing where it came from.
Which spec suits your African market?#
- Ghana. From 1 October 2026, used cars shipped to Ghana need a pre shipment inspection and cars over fifteen years old are barred, as our Ghana car import duty guide explains. Either spec works if the age and inspection fit.
- Nigeria. The market has long been supplied heavily from the US, so US spec Toyotas and Lexus models are familiar to mechanics and parts sellers. Duty and age rules are in our Nigeria import guide.
- Hot, dusty inland routes. Choose GCC spec where the car will work hard in heat, such as Sahel and upcountry fleet use.
If resale matters most, GCC spec usually holds value better with informed buyers, which is why it features in our best cars to export from Dubai list.
Frequently asked questions#
What is the difference between GCC spec and US spec cars?#
GCC spec cars were built and sold new for the Gulf, typically with uprated cooling, air conditioning and dust protection, while US spec cars were built for North America and imported into the UAE later. Both are left hand drive, and the biggest practical difference is usually the car's history rather than its hardware.
Is GCC spec better than American spec?#
For hot climates and resale, GCC spec is usually the safer choice because it was designed for the heat and its history is easier to trace in the UAE. An American spec car can be the better buy when the price gap is large and a VIN history check through the US NMVTIS title system comes back clean.
Why are American spec cars cheaper in the UAE?#
Many arrive as used or auction cars from the US, some with accident or flood history, and buyers in the Gulf discount them for the climate and resale risk. On our own listings in October 2026, US spec examples of the same model and year were about 5 to 16 percent cheaper, as with this US spec 2023 Camry SE.
How do I know if my car is GCC spec?#
Check the door pillar sticker for Arabic labels, look at the speedometer scale and ask for the UAE dealer service history. You can also decode the VIN on our VIN tracking page: a car built for North America decodes with US plant and trim details.
Can I export an American spec car from Dubai to Africa?#
Yes. A US spec car that is legally registered or held in the UAE can be exported like any other car, with an RTA export certificate and a Dubai Customs declaration. Check your own country's age and inspection rules first, which for Ghana are set out in our Ghana duty guide.
